SPOKANE VALLEY, WA— Pines Road, from north of Pinecroft Road to Trent Avenue in Spokane Valley, will be fully closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8. During the closure, BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) will install an underground support system, known as piling, for the foundation of one of two new parallel rail bridges. This work will allow for the future grade separation at Pines Road (SR27) and Trent Avenue (SR290) to move vehicles beneath the bridge for safer and more efficient travel.
The closure date is scheduled during local school district's spring breaks to minimize school-related traffic impacts. A detour will be in place at Pines Road and Mansfield Avenue for those approaching from the south, and detours onto University Road and Sullivan Road for those traveling from the north. Local access will be available between Mansfield Avenue and East Pinecroft Way. Please be aware that unforeseen circumstances could extend or delay the closure.
The City of Spokane Valley is partnering with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and BNSF to construct the Pines Road and Trent Avenue Grade Separation project. The project to separate train and vehicular traffic includes:
- Construction of an underpass at the BNSF Railway crossing
- Elimination of the street-level crossing
- Realignment of the intersection of Pines Road and Trent Avenue to the east and replacing the signalized intersection with a multilane roundabout
- Installation of new pedestrian facilities, lighting and stormwater improvements
- Construction of a new trailhead for the Centennial Trail to include parking and restrooms
The project will reduce delays and increase efficiencies, saving a total of up to four hours per day of vehicle wait time at the railroad crossing and increase safety by improving emergency vehicle access and response time. This will also eliminate the risk of train and vehicle/school bus/pedestrian collisions at the railway crossing. In addition, the project will support the local economy by improving access to nearly 170 acres of undeveloped mixed-use, commercial and industrial land, helping attract new businesses and jobs to Spokane Valley.
The $48 million project budget is fully funded, with $43 million secured in federal and state grants and the balance from BNSF contributions and city funds.
